Project name: ICIAN, Manchester

Client: Crosby Homes

Completed: 2008

Landscape Projects masterplanned and designed the public realm and precinct around the former Fishmarket and Smithfield in the heart of Manchester's Northern Quarter.

The phased project saw the implementation of a network of streets, squares and courtyards, bringing back to life the formerly run-down district.

The phase 1 works saw the completion of the Fishmarket square, which comprises a contemporary square, suitable for markets, farmers markets and events, surrounded by 4, 5 and 6 storey apartments and ground floor retail units.

The scheme carefully respected the existing listed walls of the former fishmaket, and reinstalled cast iron columns from the former buildings.

Contemporary, highly coloured elements were used to create a distinctive square, with other components of the public realm, such as stone paving, providing continuity and coherence.
